Incorrect warning message ‘Only customers with a current support and upgrades contract can upgrade for free…’ is displayed in the application update dialog when new application version is available for free tools and tools with ‘Community edition’

Applies to
ApexSQL Diff, ApexSQL Data Diff, ApexSQL Doc, ApexSQL Script, ApexSQL Complete, ApexSQL Search, ApexSQL Refactor

Summary
This article explains what to do when ‘Only customers with a current support and upgrades contract can upgrade for free…’ warning is encountered when application update is initiated for free or Community edition ApexSQL tools.

Symptoms and cause
When application update is available for download, and update has been found through application auto-update or Get updates checkup, information that only customers with an ongoing subscription are eligible to update for free is displayed. This is incorrect information in case of all free tools (ApexSQL Complete, ApexSQL Search, and ApexSQL Refactor) and tools with Community edition (ApexSQL Diff, ApexSQL Data Diff, ApexSQL Doc, ApexSQL Script). All customers which use these tools are eligible, and can upgrade to the latest available version for free at any given time.

Resolution

Even though the information is incorrect, it is possible to proceed with the update process as intended, so the warning can be simply ignored, and update process can be resumed and completed normally.

All new application releases, from January 14th 2016 onwards will have this warning message removed or updated to provide proper information on upgrade eligibility for free tools and tools with community editions.
